Lehmann&Voss&Co. introduces new generation of PTFE-modified compounds

Lehmann&Voss&Co. announces the introduction of LUVOCOM® XTF, a new generation of polymers lubricated with an advanced proprietary PTFE formulation. These new high-performance compounds exhibit significantly increased wear resistance, especially at high loads, when compared to standard PTFE formulations. “By substituting standard PTFE additives with our proprietary lubricant and by optimizing our processing technology, we have been able to substantially elevate wear resistance performance with these new compounds,” said Thomas Collet, Product Management, Lehmann&Voss&Co. “The new compounds are an innovation driven by ongoing customer demand for higher performance polymers and compounds to meet increased requirements combining high pressure and elevated temperature. This new material technology is opening up opportunities in automotive, industrial and oil and gas market applications, as well as high precision machined components via stock shapes.”

Unlike traditional PTFE-modified compounds that can have decreased performance and insufficient wear resistance at higher loads, the new LUVOCOM XTF compounds significantly improve wear resistance and provide low coefficient of friction while preserving mechanical performance. Benefits include short running-in behavior.  “OEMs like to have a short running-in phase,” explained Collet. “Otherwise their customers can experience a major disruption, or even a failure, in a dynamic system.” An additional benefit is less deposition in tool cavities during injection molding. “Because of the improved mechanical properties, the specially formulated PTFE doesn’t separate from the polymer during the injection molding process,” said Collet.

The first compounds in the LUVOCOM XTF series are based on PEEK (polyetheretherketone) polymer. Under high loads, PEEK compounds with XTF modification exhibit significantly lower levels of wear: 50% less than unreinforced PEEK and 80% less than PEEK modified with 15% standard PTFE. “For example, in combination with aramid fibers, LUVOCOM XTF provides superior wear resistance while still showing robust mechanical properties in addition to a low coefficient of friction,” added Collet.

The initial products offered in this new series are LUVOCOM 1105-9098/XTF and 1105-9182/XTF based on PEEK. Other polymer formulations are in development.
